A printed scene break may be a blank line, an ornament, or a change of heading. Audio needs a perceptible transition that preserves the author's structure without making every pause sound like the end of a chapter. Map the manuscript's break types and decide how the production will distinguish them before editing the full book.
Identify what each break means
Review the entire manuscript for section ornaments, extra spacing, dates, viewpoint labels, and location headings. Some mark a change in time or place; others separate a letter, a memory, or a short internal passage.
Create a scene map with chapter ID, scene ID, preceding line, following line, and the reason for the break. This gives the editor a reliable reference even when page numbers shift after typesetting changes.
Do not assume every blank line is intentional. Compare the production manuscript with the approved source, especially if the text was copied between formats. An accidental paragraph gap should not become a dramatic audio transition.
Distinguish scene breaks from chapter openings. A chapter title is spoken information; an unlabelled scene boundary may require only an editorial pause and a clear return to the narrative.
Approve a pause convention in context
Choose a representative pair of scenes and test several reasonable transitions. Listen to the last paragraph of the first scene and the first paragraph of the next. A pause heard in isolation tells you little about whether the change feels clear.
Do not treat one duration as a universal rule. A brisk exchange, a quiet reflection, and a large time jump may need different handling. Aim for a recognizable hierarchy between ordinary sentence spacing, paragraph spacing, and structural breaks.
If the manuscript includes a location or date label, decide its spoken form in the style sheet. Do not add “three days later” merely because it would help orientation if the author has not approved that new information.
Keep music or sound effects outside the default convention unless they are part of the project's authorized design. Such additions create separate rights, mixing, and continuity decisions.
Mark structural boundaries during assembly
Use scene IDs in your editing notes and keep the same IDs in the file manifest. An audio editor's markers can help track the approved boundary; the Audacity label-track documentation describes point and region labels as one option.
Check that the pause does not clip the final sound of the previous paragraph or the first sound of the next. An abrupt cut can make an intentional transition sound like a playback defect.
For multiple voices, confirm which voice begins the new scene. A change in cast and a change in time occurring together can be difficult to follow unless the opening sentence establishes context clearly. Review dialogue attribution when speaker identity remains uncertain.
Keep the source text visible during assembly. Reordering files or joining paragraphs can accidentally erase a structural break even when every spoken word is present somewhere in the export.
Review the listener's orientation
Listen to the complete chapter without reading and note where you first realize the scene has changed. If the realization comes several sentences late, inspect both the transition and the opening prose before making a production change.
Ask another reviewer whether the pause signals a new scene, a new chapter, or an accidental interruption. Their interpretation can reveal that the pause hierarchy is inconsistent across the book.
Record repairs using pickup edit notes, including both sides of the boundary and the approved treatment. If a replacement changes the pacing, review neighboring scene breaks for consistency.
Generate a short transition sample in the voice studio, then assemble its paragraphs in your editor. Save the approved example with the scene map. Future chapters can follow the convention while still allowing the source text's actual structure to determine where each transition belongs.
