Plosives vs Sibilance: Identify the Right Voice Recording Fix

Learn to tell plosive thumps from harsh sibilance, run focused recording tests, and choose a targeted fix without dulling the rest of a spoken voice recording.

A heavy thump on “please” and a sharp hiss on “session” need different attention. Treating both with one broad tone adjustment can leave your narration thin and unclear. First identify the sound, then test a change at the recording stage. Use editing for the remaining isolated problem when another take is impractical.

Separate the two symptoms by listening

A plosive problem often announces itself as a short low thump or gust around a consonant. Sibilance is the bright, sometimes piercing energy heard in sounds such as “s” and “sh.” Normal speech contains both kinds of consonants; the issue is whether their recorded balance distracts from the words.

Read this original test twice: “Please place the parcel beside the blue basket. Sarah will share the session notes.” Listen to the first sentence for bursts and the second for harshness. Do not judge the whole recording by the biggest shape on the waveform. Different sounds can have similar peak levels while feeling very different.

Test prevention before processing

For plosives, try a suitable pop filter and a position that does not put the microphone directly in the path of breath. Change one thing, rerecord the same sentence, and listen. Keep the voice clear while finding an arrangement that softens the unwanted burst.

For sibilance, compare a modest change in the microphone's angle relative to the mouth. Check that the new angle has not dulled every consonant. Treat those ideas as experiments for your own voice and equipment, not fixed measurements everyone must copy.

Avoid solving the wrong problem

A harsh syllable might also be distorted because the input overloaded. If you hear a crunchy edge on several loud vowels as well as consonants, review recording gain for spoken word. Reducing sibilance will not restore a clipped take.

Likewise, a low sound caused by touching a desk is not a speech plosive. Repeat the phrase without touching the surface. If the thump disappears while the same consonant remains, secure the stand or change the contact point. A reliable diagnosis prevents you from reshaping a healthy voice to hide an unrelated handling sound.

Choose a local repair for an isolated event

Work on a copy in an external audio editor. For a single breath burst, try reducing only the affected portion or replacing the phrase with a cleaner take. Listen through the whole word afterward. Cutting away its beginning may make a clean edit that changes what the listener hears.

For repeated sharp consonants, follow the de-essing workflow. If only one “s” is bothersome, a local level adjustment may be enough. Broad high-frequency reduction across an entire paragraph can make the narration dull while leaving the relationship between the problem syllable and neighboring speech largely unchanged.

Make the before-and-after comparison fair

Use the same playback volume and include the sentence before the repaired word. A repair that sounds smooth in isolation may become conspicuous in context. Your target is an intelligible consonant that belongs naturally to the sentence, not the disappearance of all breath and friction.

Imagine “Please save the session” originally contains both a thump and a piercing “s.” A successful revision preserves the clear start of “please,” retains the plural and word endings, and makes neither problem demand attention. If “session” starts sounding like a different word, back off the treatment.
