Recording gain controls the level entering your recording path. Set it for the performance you will actually give, including its stronger words. A quiet “testing, testing” followed by an excited read can overload a setup that looked safe during rehearsal. Leave space for natural variation instead of trying to fill the meter.
Identify the input control and the monitor control
Find which control changes the recorded signal and which changes only what you hear. These might be separate knobs on an interface, sliders in a recorder, or settings in an app. Turn the headphone level down and verify that the recorded waveform does not change merely because playback is quieter.
Select the intended microphone explicitly. Make a short recording and lightly test a known sound near that source without striking the microphone. Confirm you are not accidentally using a laptop microphone or a computer loopback input. The gain setting is meaningful only after the source is correct.
Rehearse the strongest part of the script
Choose a sentence with the loudest planned delivery, then include a quieter sentence immediately afterward. Keep the same posture, orientation, and distance you expect to use for the session. Set the input while listening and watching the recording meter.
You do not need one universal peak target for every device and performance. You do need clear speech with headroom and no overload indication. A practical test line is: “That is the result we were waiting for. Now let us check the smaller details.” Read the first sentence with the intended emphasis, not with an exaggerated shout you will never use.
Record and play back the test
A moving meter proves that a signal exists, not that the sound is good. Play the saved recording and listen for crunchy peaks, unexpected hiss, or a strained sound on vowels. Check the strongest word again at a comfortable playback volume.
If distortion exists in the file, lower the appropriate input stage and repeat. If it exists only in your headphones or speakers, inspect the monitoring path. Some devices can overload before the software's final meter, so a low-looking recorded waveform does not by itself prove that every earlier stage was clean.
Use the plosives-versus-sibilance diagnosis when only certain consonants sound objectionable. Do not lower the entire performance to solve a microphone breath burst if the main issue is positioning.
Keep the gain stable through a coherent take
Once the test works, record the passage without chasing every word with the input control. If the performance changes dramatically, stop and establish a new setting for the new section. Make a note so later pickups can reproduce it.
For example, a quiet introduction and a shouted character line may deserve separate takes with appropriate settings. Repeatedly twisting the gain during one sentence can create an uneven result that is harder to edit than the original variation.
For smaller differences after recording, use clip gain. For broader dynamic control, evaluate gentle compression in an external editor. Neither should be treated as permission to overload the original recording.
Know when a new take is the best repair
Lowering the volume of a clipped recording makes the distortion quieter but does not recreate the missing waveform. Audacity describes Clip Fix as an attempted reconstruction suited to light clipping, not a reliable recovery of every damaged take.
If the speaker is available and the sentence is short, record it again while matching its context. Keep the clean original source before mastering or other effects.
