A single narrator often begins as a mono source, while the finished project may be stereo because it includes music or other spatial sound. These are separate choices. Decide what each channel contains and what the delivery requires rather than assuming that two channels automatically mean higher quality.
Inspect the source before choosing an export
Open the file and listen to each channel when possible. Two waveforms may contain identical voice audio, different microphones, or a voice on one side and silence on the other. The filename alone does not tell you which situation you have.
For a single microphone recorded into one side of a stereo input, the practical goal is usually to place that voice appropriately in the listener mix. Do not simply duplicate every channel or sum them blindly. First identify which channel contains the usable recording.
Audacity documents splitting stereo tracks into separate mono tracks. That can help inspect the material, but it does not create independent speakers from a combined conversation.
Distinguish mono from one-sided playback
A mono voice can play through both left and right outputs when centered in a stereo mix. It does not inherently mean the listener hears speech in only one ear.
One-sided playback often reflects routing or panning rather than a limitation of mono audio. Check the editor's track pan, channel assignment, and export settings. Test the exported file, since a correct monitor arrangement can still be followed by an incorrect export.
An original example: a tutorial sounds normal on the editor's speakers but comes only from the left ear in headphones. Inspecting the source reveals one active channel. Converting or routing the usable voice appropriately solves the layout problem without inventing stereo width.
Keep editorial separation where it is useful
For multiple speakers, independent tracks make level and timing adjustments easier. That does not mean each speaker must occupy a different ear in the final delivery.
Use the separate-speaker recording workflow to preserve sources. During mixing, choose placement that serves the format and remains comfortable for ordinary listening. Strong left-right separation may be a deliberate dramatic choice, but it should not be an accidental consequence of input wiring.
Retain the multitrack project before making a combined file. A mono delivery can be appropriate even when the editing session contains many tracks.
Check what happens when channels combine
Some stereo effects or duplicated recordings change dramatically when summed to mono. Listen for a voice that becomes quieter, thin, or nearly absent.
If that happens, follow the phase-cancellation diagnosis. A wider-sounding stereo treatment is not useful if the core narration disappears on a different playback path.
Audacity's mixing commands describe ways to render tracks and convert channel layouts. Work on a copy and compare the result rather than assuming that a conversion command preserves every earlier routing intention.
Match the final specification and verify the file
Check the receiving platform or client's current delivery requirements. Channel layout is separate from codec, sample rate, and loudness. Use the sample-rate guide for that part of the export decision.
Play the exported file in headphones and on a basic speaker. Confirm that the voice is present, centered where intended, and balanced against any music. If the project has a stereo sound design, include a mono compatibility check before release.
