Compression can make narration easier to follow when louder and quieter moments differ too much for the listening context. It can also flatten emphasis, expose breaths, or make the background seem to surge. Use the smallest amount of control that solves the actual problem, and compare the result at a similar playback level.
Decide whether compression is the right first step
Listen to the whole passage and identify the pattern. If one imported clip is much louder than its neighbors, use clip gain before asking a compressor to fix the transition. If every sentence contains excessive swings, compression may be more relevant.
Do not compress a voice simply because a production checklist includes the effect. A stable generated passage or a well-controlled recording may already work in the intended mix.

Watch any gain-reduction display as supporting information. A visually active meter is not proof of a better result, and a tidy waveform is not the target. The listener's experience determines whether the dynamics are appropriate.
Listen for pumping and breath exaggeration
Pay attention to what happens between words. If background sound swells after every phrase, the settings or processing approach may be unsuitable. If breaths suddenly dominate, compare the unprocessed version at matched loudness before deciding whether the compressor caused the problem.
Use the breath-editing workflow for isolated distracting inhalations. Do not remove every breath to compensate for aggressive compression. Reconsider the compressor first.
In a music mix, do not keep increasing compression just to overpower the soundtrack. Ducking the music or changing its arrangement may preserve speech expression more effectively.
Match loudness before deciding and check the final file
Compensate for the volume difference when comparing processed and original versions. Otherwise, the louder version can seem clearer or more exciting even when its phrasing is worse.
Listen at a modest playback level and check the quietest important words. Then inspect the final output for unwanted overload after all processing. Compression alone is not a complete delivery specification; any platform-specific loudness or peak requirements still need their own verification.
